COFFEE FARMERS FROM OÉ-CUSSE PARTICIPATE IN FESTIVAL KAFÉ TIMOR 2019
Last week, 6 Atoni coffee producers travelled to Dili to participate in the fourth edition of Festival Kafé Timor. The festival, organized by the Asossiacion Café Timor (ACT), has been proclaimed a must-see event for all farmers and coffee businesses around Timor-Leste interested in sharing their products and knowledge with the aim of improving their quality and presence in the market.
This year, 6 farmers from the Oé-Cusse region, accompanied by 3 coffee specialists and staff from the Regional Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development in RAEOA – ZEESM TL visited the event aiming to learn and improve their own coffee. Farmers, UNDP, and ZEESM TL staff took the opportunity to form new alliances with other coffee businesses with the aim of strengthening the region’s agriculture sector and improving its results.
The opening of Festival Kafé Timor took place on Monday 14th October. On the following day, a workshop lead by women about encouraging women to engage in the coffee industry took place. On Friday, the participants visited the coffee production of Quirilelo, in Aileu district, where they were introduced to pruning techniques, fertilizing coffee plants and diversification for coffee plants to ensure and increase the productivity and quality of coffee. During the remaining days, the festival hosted the Coffee Quality competition. On Saturday 19th, the festival closed at Timor Plaza gathering all the attendants and having a final coffee expo.
The participating farmers together with the staff of the Regional Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development were very grateful for the opportunity of taking part in this event. The innovative techniques, methods, processes and the use of new equipment shared last week showed them the results of their hard work and motivated them to improve their own production.
