Fight against Tuberculosis intensifies in Oé-Cusse
His Excellency Dr. Mari Alkatiri, President of the Oé-Cusse Ambeno Special Administrative Region Authority (RAEOA – ZEESM – TL), received the Infectious-Contagious Department of Oé-Cusse on Thursday, January 24, 2019, to find out about the work done and the action plan being prepared with one objective: to eliminate Tuberculosis in the Region by 2035, in line with the National Strategic Plan.
Tuberculosis still leads the list of the top 10 causes of death in Timor-Leste. The treatment, long, requires observation and daily medication, and should be extended to the whole family, to avoid contagion. Aware of the difficulties that this and other infectious diseases represent, the local team presented the situation, stressing the need for investment in social measures (combating malnutrition, for instance) and structural conditions (isolation spaces, screening units, etc.) so that the fight against Tuberculosis, Leprosy, Malaria and HIV can have satisfactory and meaningful results.
At the end of the presentation, the President of the Authority expressed his solidarity with the goal of eliminating Tuberculosis from the Region and stated to be determined to lead this challenge, politically, leading the search for support and international partners who can help with knowledge, good practices and financing.
The Plan for the Elimination of Tuberculosis of RAEOA – ZEESM-TL should be publicly launched on 24 March 2019, the date of the World TB Day.
