IRRI specialist visited Oé-Cusse Ambeno aiming to improve local rice culture
Senior Associate Scientist and Agronomy Extensionist, Mr. Joel D. Janiya, from International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), visited Oé-Cusse from the 15th to 17th of January 2019. The work visit included field trips to several rice paddies (Kaktua Naek, Barel, Oekasi and Betbanae Tuan) and also training actions that took place in the SRADR department offices in Pante Makasar.
The purpose of the visit was to gather data about the environmental conditions (soil nutrition, climate conditions, water supplies) and practices (use of fertilizers, labor, seed management, crop establishment) that are done for the rice production, so as facts about the production itself (productivity, market conditions, number of harvests per year, …). Last day was reserved for training with the extensionists of the SRADR (Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Regional Development) staff, to explain technologies for improving the rice production, the use of fertilizers and management of pests and disease, as well as good quality seed selection.
In a process conducted by the Regional Secretary for Agriculture Mr. Regio da Cruz Salu, and accompanied by UNDP staff, IRRI is going to establish bonds with SRADR to help supporting the farmers from Oé-Cusse. This support is going to be facilitated with materials, assistance and knowledge for the agricultural extensionist of the government, besides of offering casual trainings about the best practices for rice production.
