26 October, 2017: Communities of Fonte Sagrada and Oé-Silo assign organizational roles within tourism development process

On 25th and 26th October, the Regional Secretariat for Community Tourism in RAEOA – ZEESM TL organized community meetings in Fonte Sagrada and Oé-Silo

This week community members in Fonte Sagrada and Oé-Silo met to discuss and actively take part in the process of tourism development in Oé-Cusse. During the meetings each community agreed to assign roles and responsibilities within a previously established Working Group. The group members, with equal representation of women and men consist of: youth, community, NGO, private and education sector representatives.

Beginning of 2017 within the framework of Community Tourism development in the Oé-Cusse Ambeno, Regional Secretariat for Community Tourism RAEOA – ZEESM TL prioritized two locations for piloting community based tourism (CBT): 1. Area of Fonte Sagrada and 2. Oé-Silo.

As part of these initiatives Regional Secretariat started working with communities in June 2017 and conducted following activities:

  • Assessed potential for tourism development of the area
  • Facilitated establishment of Working Groups as the main bodies for participatory tourism Development in each community
  • Organized first tourist visit in July 2017 to areas of Fonte Sagrada and Oé-Silo.

Later on, motivational and awareness raising workshops were held with the aim of showcasing best practice examples of community tourism from around the world and motivating communities to actively participate in development.

In October the first phase of Tour Guide Training was held as part of CBT activities, while this week communities agreed to assign roles and responsibilities within their respective Working groups, and develop organigram of the group. These members from now on will be the voice of the community towards the government and will actively engage in capacity building activities in tourism, as well as welcoming tour guides training and jointly organizing tourist visits.
