26, September 2017: The bishop of Dili inaugurates the statue of Nossa Senhora da Pregrinasaun in Leolbatan
The statue, a duplicate of the one which is in Ramelau, has needed to wait for almost twenty years to find a place to be installed since it arrived to the country in 1998
Last Tuesday 26th September, hundreds of people welcomed the bishop of Dili in Pante Macassar airport. During his five-day official visit to Oé-Cusse, the Exmo. Bishop Virgilio do Carmo da Silva has officiated 63 weddings, has visited the parishes in the region and has met with the main authorities.
Nevertheless, the main reason of his visit was the official inauguration of the statue of Nossa Senhora da Pregrinasaun in Leolbatan, an event that gathered a great number of the Atoni population. The statue, rename by the bishop as “the queen of Oé-Cusse”, is a duplicate of the one which stays in Ramelau Mountain. Both of them were created in 1965 in Italy and arrived to Timor Leste in 1998. However, this one has needed to wait for almost twenty years to find the ideal location to rest. Finally, Leolbatan has been the place selected and the local community were really grateful with this decision.
After five days, the official visit of the bishop finished on Saturday with a meeting with the teachers of Oé-Cusse and his return to Dili.
